Commonly known as TEFLON® (registered trademark of DUPONT®), PTFE is a thermoplastic polymer of tetrafluoroethylene.

This NON-ELASTIC material is distinguished by a number of excellent properties:

-The surface is smooth and repellent, which is especially favorable in those applications in which the adherence of residual substances.
-It is self-lubricating.
It is physiologically harmless up to a service temperature of +200º C, so it is fully compatible in the industry food and laboratories.
-The coefficient of friction is very low (0.04) compared to most materials with which it is in contact.
-Dynamic and static friction are almost identical.
-The electrical insulation properties are exceptionally good. They are almost independent of frequency and influences exerted by temperature and weather conditions.
-Its chemical resistance exceeds that of all elastomers and other thermoplastics. Therefore, there is good resistance to swelling in almost all media. It suffers a slight swelling against fluorinated hydrocarbons.
-At high temperatures and pressures, liquid alkali metals and some fluorinated compounds attack PTFE. However, it is stress-free and resistant to almost all aggressive products.
-The range of thermal application is between -200º C to + 260º C approximately. At -200ºC, PTFE still has a certain elasticity; therefore the material can be used for gaskets and very special construction parts, e.g. ex. Also in LIQUEFIED GASES.
-It is completely non-flammable and non-combustible.
-It is not affected by the weather or exposure to the sun.
-Does not absorb moisture.

The following must be taken very important to take in mind when pure PTFE seals are uses:
- From a certain load, the material is permanently deformed by creep or cold creep.
- The wear resistance is very low.
- Thermal expansion is, as in most plastics, ten times greater than that of metals.
- The thermal conductivity is low, so that the evacuation of heat in moving supports and joints can be problematic.
- The material is flexible, and not elastic, but plastic like polyethylene. For this reason, it must be taken into account that the joints Elastomer (rubbers) in certain applications cannot be easily replaced by PTFE gaskets.

Aplications:
Given its high chemical resistance and wide temperature range, its field of application is extraordinary, especially in chemical industry, fine mechanics and electrical engineering. Offers high adaptability.
As it complies with FDA requirements, it is recommended for use in the food industry and laboratories.
In those applications where elasticity / recovery capacity is necessary, Expanded PTFE should be used.

The data described in this sheet is informational and has been provided by the material manufacturer, based on technical testing.
